My first memory of Alfajores...

We all know those certain foods which bring back fond memories from our past. Growing up in Melbourne (Australia), my husband Dom told me all about his favourite food Memories from his childhood. Tiny Teddies, Sunnyboy's, Redskins and Fizzies. He's memories were all about excitedly lining up at the school "Tuck Shop" with the change he saved up doing chores at home. He didn't eat them as often as the other kids but he did manage to list off a dozen different 90's foods from his childhood in a matter of seconds. (With a huge smile on his face of course!)

The food from my childhood was very different, granted, I grew up 12,000km's away across the pacific ocean in Tucuman (Northern Argentina). For me it was all about Tita's, Bananita's Dolca and of course, Alfajores! Unfortunately my earliest memories were in stark contrast to my husband's and I very rarely got my sugar fix. I grew up poor and every peso was spent on the essentials only. This is exactly why I still remember the day I tried an Alfajor for the first time...

I was 5 years old and her name was Romina. Her parents owned a small Verduleria, (fruit shop) on the corner of my street. They sold freshly made Alfajores and I walked by everyday dreaming of trying one. One day, walking home from school, I saw Romina was eating an Alfajor out the front of the shop. Carelessly chomping away, creating an avalanche of crumbs which hit the the footpath like biscuity daggers, straight into my tiny heart. A little dramatic, yes, but I couldn't believe she wasn't cupping her hands to catch the crumbs! She spotted my envious eyes and to my disbelief, extended her hand holding a small piece of her Alfajor. Thinking she would change her mind I quickly grabbed it, almost crushing it in my hands. I immediately shoved it straight into my mouth. The soft creamy biscuit and Dulce De Leche melted into my mouth, giving me a brief taste of what would be become a life long obsession. I was hooked and over 30 years later, I still remember that day like it was yesterday!

Thanks for reading my first blog post about my history with the amazing Alfajor, It was always be my fondest and purest memory!
